Posse Horses

Horses that are used for Posse functions need to have a quiet personality, be well-mannered, well-trained and tolerant of lots of commotion. The weekly Ride Nights are used to train our horses for special functions such as parades and security by exposing them to all manner of scary objects in a controlled environment. This "nuisance" training is one way to see on which types of missions a particular horse will be suitable to go. These training sessions are also used to further the horses’ training by working with local trainers on a regular basis. They also provide a way for members to keep their horses fit during the winter months when trail riding opportunities are limited.

Horses used for posse missions must be mares or geldings. Stallions, mules, draft horses and ponies are not permitted. This is not to say that they can’t participate in Ride Nights, only that they are not allowed on missions. Any breed is permitted so long as the previous requirement is met.

Members must supply their own suitable mount, transportation and some horse-related equipment. The mount must be:

  1. Of saddle-type breeding with no apparent draft blood.
  2. Not less than 14.2 hands or over 16 hands.
  3. A mare or gelding.
  4. Of suitable demeanor for Posse functions.
  5. Approved by the Second Lieutenant of Equipment.
